KIHEFO promotes local initiated solutions to fight disease, ignorance and poverty in southwestern Uganda
Sometimes numbers speak louder than words. TO – the WORLD, a Toronto-based organization, recently wrapped up their inaugural health and dental mission in Kigezi region of southwestern Uganda, working on-the-ground collaboratively with KIHEFO.
The joint mission to provide over 2000 people with access to dental and health services certainly fared its ups and downs, adapting to weather, location, cultural context, and working within low-resource settings. Days were long, and sometimes stressful, but overall, the mission was a huge success…
So here are the hard facts:
8+ months planning and fundraising for the inaugural health and dental mission in southwestern Uganda.
14 Canadian volunteers – 2 doctors, 3 medical residents, 2 dentists, 1 dental assistant, 3 dental hygienists, 1 nutritionist, and 2 logistics volunteers.
40 + Ugandan volunteers – health professionals, dental officers, family planning counsellors, registration & logistics volunteers.
80+ Ugandan Nursing Students who gained hands-on learning experiences, and helped Canadian health professionals to translate into the local language to best serve patients.
50 pregnant women to participate in the Pilot-Project of Ultrasound & HIV/AIDS and Syphilis Screening – which today is gaining national recognition for its innovation in reducing Mother to Child Transmission of HIV/AIDS.
1 filmmaker to capture the mission in action, and take the initial steps in creating a feature-film on the important work of TO – the WORLD and KIHEFO.
$20,000 worth of medicines and dental supplies donated by TO – the WORLD to KIHEFO to increase continued capacity to offer health outreach in hard to reach communities of Kigezi, Uganda.
2 Organizations & 2 Countries – working in solidarity to fight poverty and disease in southwestern Uganda.
And sometimes a song speaks louder than saying – “Thank you”…so to echo the sentiment of the welcome song, sung by school children in Kyanamira on Day 2, where TO – the WORLD treated over 300 patients…KIHEFO sincerely thanks TO – the WORLD organizers, volunteers, and donors…and we look forward to planning the second annual mission in 2014!
